About

Welcome to Cycling4Cancer!

My name is Chris Gruar, and this is my blog of my charity cycling trip from England to Australia. This was my first major cycling adventure, and through doing the journey I set out to raise money for Worldwide Cancer Research (previously the Association for International Cancer Research – AICR). The ride took over twenty-seven  months and totaled nearly forty-three thousand kilometers, taking me through forty-three countries.

While on the road I shared my journey through regular blog updates, photographs, videos, and press and media. You can also check out my road-by-road route by viewing my map. If your new to the site and still wondering why the hell someone would choose to cycle alone across the world, then please have a read through my Frequently Asked Questions!

    • Hi Andrius,

Thank you for your words of encouragement, and a service in Vilnius will be absolutely fantastic, thanks! I think my Dawes Vantage will be in much need of a good service by that stage! I am hoping to spend at least a few days in Vilnius too as I’ve heard so many positive things about the city! Thanks you again and I look forward to meeting you in Lithuania 🙂

      Take care,

    Very best wishes

Norma & Trevor Duffield, Heanor, Derbyshire.

    • Thanks Norma and Trevor – the days on the bike can get really lonely, so thanks for coming over for a chat! I really appreciate your donation- keeps me going up those hills! The ride south from Buxton through Staffordshire was beautiful.

      Take care,

      Chris

  5. Hi Chris, I’m one of the girls from the cafe you were in today at Acton Scott. I came home an told mum about what you were doing. She said if you need somewhere warm to stay in this awful weather then your are more than welcome to stay on her sofa tonight.

    If not best wishes,

    Ceri

    • Hi Ceri- thanks for your kind offer! Unfortunatle I dont have the internet on me on the road, so I was only able to get your message now- thanks anyway! It was quite a miserable night, but I had a few hundred sheep to keep me company! Oh and the carrot cake and orange juice use were kind enough to donate really cheered me up in the tent 🙂

      Take care Ceri

      Chris

  6. Hi Chris, Rob’s brother here. Just a message to give you the best of luck; we’ll be following you all the way here in Italy. If & when you need anything then don’t hesitate to contact us – there are lots of Carbs and Pasta around!!

  7. Hi Chris, Rob’s brother here calling from Italy. Just a message wishing you all the best on your journey homeward bound. If & when you need anything (if Italy’s on the path) then don’t hesitate to contact us – we’ve got plenty of carbs and pasta!!

    • Hey mate,

Thanks for the kind offer in Italy. I am tempted to cross the Alps actually, so in eight months time who knows! And I certainly will need weeks of feasting on carbs by that time. After our clubbing experience in Robs house we could even live stream another trance night 🙂

      All the best,

      Chris

  8. Chris, it was a pleasure to meet you and find out more about your exciting journey to raise all important funds for the treatment of cancer. With your interest in history, Fishbourne Roman Palace seemed like an appropriate place to stop. You sure are a fast cyclist. I have an electric bicycle and could barely keep up with you.

    Best wishes
    Elizabeth

    • Thanks Elizabethe – it was great to meet you too and the scones and tea kept me going all afternoon 🙂 Im jealous of your electric bike (I think ill have to get me one to get up to the Arctic). Ill keep in touch with you via email with the magazine. All the best, Chris

  9. Hi Chris,
you met a friend of mine, Alex, few days ago in France.

Just wanted to wish you best of luck and offer any remote help I can give you in Italy and offer to keep you company for few kms when you finally get to Australia. By the time you get here I’m sure I can switch from marathons to cycling.

What you are doing is amazing.
    Cheers
    L

    • Hi Luca,

Great to hear from you – and thanks for the wishes! If you havn’t changed to cycling by then than perhaps you can get me running (although I can usually only manage a kilometre or so)…

      Cheers,

      Chris

  10. Great blog for a great cause! Best of Luck and a safe journey to you. {There is a blog called boundsouth.org, it’s about brothers who did a ride like this for Habitat for Humanity. Just thought their journey might encourage you on yours.}

  11. Great doing for this noble cause Chris, I really appreciate your effort, I am new to blogging and really liked your blog and what you are doing.
Cycling such a long distance is adventurous and must be exciting, keep your spirits high
My best wishes with you 🙂

    Shiv

  12. I admire your sense of adventure and purpose!

My mom and grandmother both died from breast cancer.

And I also work for humanitarian cause.

Why not pass by Philippines? We have beautiful scenery of beaches and mountains…

I wish you all the best!

  13. Chris you’re amazing!! It won’t be too long now before you reach the half-way mark. CELEBRATIONS…what an epic journey and special life experience. ‘Good luck’ for the remainder of your chosen expedition and ‘good health’ to ensure your dream comes true! Best wishes….Marion.

  17. Chris,
Couldn’t be happier and prouder to see what you’re up to. It’s a long way from Elderslie but you’ll be pleased to hear your adventure has had comments here in the states. Great Job!! Keep the picture coming.

    • Thanks Hardy – yeah Elderslie feels like a world away from here in Macedonia! Slight chance a ride across America might happen, so I’ll keep you posted if I extend the trip there… Great to hear from you; let me know if you want to put those rowing skills of yours to use for charity (a race along the biketrack in Camden? haha) 🙂

      All the best,

      Gruar

  18. Hi Chris,

I really like that you are doing and it was such a pleasure to meet you in Greece.

I hope you continue and raise enough money to accomplish your purpose .

    Best wishes,

    Thanos

    • Hi Thanos,

Thanks for your words. I’m grounded in Patras for another week to wait for a new bike from England. Thankfully I’ve been able to arrange multiple school visits next week so its nice to put my time here to use!

      All the best,

      Chris

  19. I’ve been surfing online more than three hours lately, but I never found any fascinating article like yours. It’s lovely value sufficient for
me. In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made good content
material as you probably did, the internet will likely
be much more useful than ever before.

  20. Hello would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using? I’m planning to start my own blog soon
but I’m having a tough time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique.
P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!

  21. Please let me know if you’re looking for a writer for your blog. You have some really great posts and I feel I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d really like to write some material
for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine.
Please send me an email if interested. Many thanks!

    • Hello,

thanks for your comment – I just use wordpress.com, and selected a theme that ticked all the boxes for me. I find wordpress much more easier to use than other blog sights, and just about passes for a proper website once you edit all the appearances etc. Anyways hope that helps. Chris

    • Poppy it’s nice to hear your enjoying the journey! I wish I had such ready access to a mug of coffee… in Iran I’m struggling to find some proper Turkish brew, except in places like the bazaars of Esfahan. Unfortunately it’s still a month until my next blog, although I will have a post up from Mashhad sharing the ten images I’ve taken at each thousand km to 20, 000!

      Chris

  22. Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog
in the near future but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.
P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I had
    to ask!

    • Hi,

Thanks I’m glad you enjoy my customized design. It’s Parament: Automattic. You can put a background image too, but after experimenting I chose just to use a shade of dark blue. Anyways, hope that helps!

      Chris

  23. Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this site. It’s
simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appeal. I must say that you’ve done a
great job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Firefox.
    Outstanding Blog!

  24. We stumbled over here coming from a different web address and thought I
might check things out. I like what I see
so now i’m following you. Look forward to looking into your web page repeatedly.

  25. I would like to thank you for the efforts you’ve put in penning this website. I really hope to see the same high-grade blog posts by you later on as well. In truth, your creative writing abilities has inspired me to get my very own website now 😉

  26. Can I simply just say what a comfort to uncover someone that truly knows what they are talking about on the net.
You actually realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important.
A lot more people must look at this and understand this side of your
story. It’s surprising you aren’t more popular because you surely have the gift.
